Harry Styles has branded 'twerking' "inappropriate".

Despite using a routine that contained twerking for the cameras at the Teen Choice Awards last month, the One Direction singer criticised those who perform the controversial dance move, believing it "promotes promiscuity" among young girls.

Speaking to US film listings website Moviefone: "I think it's quite inappropriate. Especially for the age groups that it's aimed at.

"I think it's, you know, promoting promiscuity."

Regarding Miley Cyrus' recent, infamously twerk-heavy performance at the MTV Music Video Awards, in which she grinded with Robin Thicke during a duet of his single Blurred Lines, Styles joked that the routine was "family friendly".

When asked what he thought of the performance, he quipped: "Very reserved.

"She's quite shy and I think it's time she came out of her shell.

"[It was] family friendly. You could watch it with your kids and your grandma."

The other One Direction bandmates also made light of Cyrus' performance, with Liam Payne labelling it "cute" while Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson didn't understand why there's been so much controversy surrounding it.

Niall said: "I don't get why everyone is sulking about her."

Louis added: "I was shocked at how much coverage it got and I think she was shocked. I don't think she even knew she'd get that much attention from it."
