Gemma Collins fall: TOWIE star was saved from being crushed by Love Island ‘hero’ Marcel Somerville

Love Island’s Marcel Somerville has been hailed the “perfect gentleman” for saving Gemma Collins from being crushed after she plummeted through the stage at the Radio 1 Teen Awards.

Collins, 36, slipped and fell down a trapdoor after misjudging her step as she announced Love Island had won the Best TV Show prize at Sunday afternoon’s ceremony.

Somerville, who was brought up onto the stage with Jamie Jewitt and Amber Davies via the hole Collins fell down, said his quick reaction saved Collins from having her limbs crushed by the hydraulics.

He tweeted: “When you win best tv at the #R1TeenAwards and save #gemmacollins foot and hand from be crushed #herolife.”

Collins thanked Somerville and Jewitt for quickly helping her back onto her feet, and apologised for nearly ‘wiping them out’ as she recalled the ‘near-fatal’ incident on This Morning.

Speaking to Amanda Holden and Ben Shephard she said: “[The Love Island cast] were screaming, ‘Get her up, get her up – her legs are going to be crushed’ because the platform underneath was raising up and my legs were dangling over the end of it.

“So thank you to the two Love Island guys. Poor [Davies] there nearly got totally crushed. There was nothing of her.”

She added: “I just want to apologise because I wiped them out. They had to go and see the paramedics afterwards.”

Collins is reportedly considering suing the BBC over the accident which happened at London’s Wembley Arena.

Speaking to The Sun she said: “I've got to consult a lawyer, yeah. The BBC, they've not been in touch with any compensation or anything - or even an apology.”

Collins also claimed she had not been fully briefed about the stage before going out on to it.

A spokeswoman for Radio 1 told the Sun: “The BBC takes the health and safety of everyone involved very seriously and we are awaiting a full report from Remedy, the production company who made the show, about the incident, but they have told us that Gemma did receive a full briefing before going on stage.”

Despite being in “agony” the TOWIE regular later made light of the incident by sharing a picture of herself in a mock advert for the National Accident Helpline.
