Coldplay fans were delighted when they saw the Christmas trailer for Sky Movies, believing the soundtrack was the band’s new single.

But after speculation online, it has been revealed that the tune was in fact recorded especially for Sky by London musician Daniel Heptinstall.

He writes songs for the channel in breaks from performing and recording with his own punk-folk band Skinny Lister. Heptinstall, 38, who recorded the vocals, drum, bass and piano in his home studio in Greenwich, said it was “quite bizarre” to have his song, Heartstrings, attributed to one of the world’s biggest selling bands. “It wasn’t like I was trying to write a Coldplay tune but when I listened to it I can see why people might think that,” he said. “It’s a big bombastic sound but it’s all me.”

The advert generated thousands of hits on social media and led to 1,000 telephone calls of interest. Sky issued a statement of clarification which ran on Coldplay’s Twitter account and on a Coldplay fan page on Facebook.

Sky is now said to be considering releasing the track as a single to capitalise on its popularity.

Heptinstall writes “the odd tune” for Sky whenever his own band is not on tour: “It gives me another outlet to experiment with other sounds.”

One London music publisher said: “To be compared to or mistaken for Coldplay is like hitting the jackpot as a songwriter.”

Heptinstall will be back to his day job next year when Skinny Lister embark on a UK tour and release a new album, Down On Deptford Broadway.
