Ewan McGregor thanks estranged wife AND new girlfriend in ‘awkward’ Golden Globes acceptance speech

Ewan McGregor’s Golden Globes acceptance speech was dubbed the most ‘awkward’ of the night as he thanked both his estranged wife and his new girlfriend.

The Scottish star made the bold decision to pay special tribute to Eve Mavrakis, his wife of 22 years, and new love Mary Elizabeth Winstead, as he picked up the Best Actor prize for Fargo.

“I want to take a moment to just say thank you to Eve, who always stood by me for 22 years, and my four children Clara, Esther, Jamyan and Anouk,” he said on stage on Sunday night.

Viewers were left in shock when McGregor then went on to thank his Fargo co-stars, paying special tribute to Winstead.

“And I've always loved being an actor and I love hanging out with actors and I got amazing actors to work with on this,” he said.

"There wouldn't have been Emmit Stussy without David Thewlis and Michael Stuhlbarg and Carrie Coon and there wouldn't have been a Ray without Mary Elizabeth Winstead.”

One surprised viewer wrote on Twitter: “I need everyone to appreciate that Ewan Mcgregor just thanked his soon-to-be ex wife and his new girlfriend in THE SAME GOLDEN GLOBE SPEECH.”

“So did Ewan thank his (ex?) wife and the lady he was pictured kissing in the same speech..? #Awkward,” posted another.

Another wrote: “Enjoying how, in one speech, Ewan McGregor thanked his wife of 22 years and the actress he left her for.”

Neither McGregor nor Mavrakis have publicly spoken out about the end of their marriage, but they are reported to have split last year.

McGregor was spotted kissing Winstead just a few months later, although neither have confirmed the relationship.
