Ed Sheeran’s new single Castle on the Hill has sparked a plea from police who have warned the singer to drive safely.

The track is a “love song” about Suffolk and features the line “driving at 90 down those country lanes”.

Sgt Chris Harris, from Norfolk and Suffolk Roads Policing, took aim at the worrisome lyric and called on Sheeran to “please slow down”.

He tweeted: “#DriveToArrive Ed Sheeran. Know you want to get home but please slow down on #SuffolkRoads.

“#WelcomeBackEd #DrivingAt90 #CastleOnTheHill.”

The tweet was accompanied by a poster which read: “A quarter of drivers have had a near miss on country roads.”

The hashtag #WelcomebackEd was soon trending as fans branded Sheeran the ‘saviour’ of 2017. James Corden deemed the tracks “epic” while Courteney Cox described them as “beautiful”.

The tracks come from his upcoming album ÷ Divide – which continues his symbols theme having titled his first album + (Plus), while his second was called x (Multiply).

Speaking on the BBC 1 Breakfast Show with Scott Mills, Sheeran said he had plans for a collaboration with Rihanna for Shape of You but quickly changed his mind.

Explaining the change of heart he said: “But then I was singing some of the lyrics and was like Rihanna is not going to sing these words so kept it to myself.”
