Ed Sheeran is officially the most-played musician of 2015 in the UK.

The British singer, who is currently on a career hiatus, has topped this year’s Phonographic Performance Ltd's (PPL) People’s Chart.

The annual chart is based on TV and radio airplay, song use in adverts and plays in public venues including nightclubs.

But while Sheeran is the most-played artist, Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk was officially the most regularly-played song of 2015.

Just behind Sheeran in the list is his friend Taylor Swift, who is the second most-played artist of the year.

Olly Murs is in third place on the chart, followed by Take That, Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith, Jess Glynne and Years & Years.

While the top half of this year’s chart is dominated by British talent, big US names including Karty Perry, Madonna and Rihanna sit further down.

At the end of last year, Sheeran announced that he would be taking a break from social media and from his music career.

He wrote on Instagram: “I'm taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while, I've had such an amazing ride over the last 5 (sic) years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I'm taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed.”
