Coleen Rooney doesn’t want to get into a “tit-for-tat” row with fellow Wag Rebekah Vardy but suspected her of leaking stories for “some time”, friends said today.

Rooney, wife of England’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney, believes Vardy, pictured, was responsible for stories about her ending up in the press over recent years, they said.

It led her to set up the elaborate sting operation which she claims shows that Vardy’s Instagram account was the source of the leaked stories.

Vardy, 37, who is heavily pregnant, has denied any wrongdoing and is determined to “clear my name”.

She is said to be calling in forensic computer experts to examine who had access to her Instagram account.

Friends of Rooney, 33, told the Standard she was “not worried” by talk of legal action, saying there was proof that Vardy’s Instagram profile was the only one used to view the personal posts.

A friend said: “She is not worried about anything. There is a lot of evidence over the last five months that proves that.

"The reason she did it publicly is because everything that was leaked was done publicly over the last five years. She has sent some evidence but not all. If she is officially asked then she will.

“But she does not want to get into a tit-for-tat over this.”

In interviews today, Vardy insisted she was not responsible and that her legal team would need the screenshot evidence.

The wife of Leicester City striker Jamie told The Sun: “Everyone hates me. I swear I didn’t do this. I would never have done anything like this and certainly not to Coleen.”

Rooney, 33, was nicknamed “Wagatha Christie” over her efforts to unmask who was leaking stories.

She said stories she had falsified about “gender selection in Mexico, and the story about returning to TV, and then the latest story about the basement flooding in my new house” had all made it into print.

Denying the allegations, former I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! star Vardy said she was “so upset” that Rooney had made the accusation and she was “disgusted that I’m even having to deny this”.

A spokesman for Rooney said: “It is irrefutable that the leaks came from one account, and one account only.”

The saga made headlines around the world, with the hashtag #WagathaChristie trending on Twitter.
