BBC presenter Clare Balding unwittingly sparked speculation on her marriage after leaving her wedding ring at home ahead of the Olympics in Brazil.

Eagle-eyed viewers noticed that the sports presenter was not wearing the ring in the lead-up to the 2016 Rio Olympics opening ceremony.

But her wife Alice Arnold, revealed she was advised not to take wedding ring with her during safety advice.

Watching from the UK, she tweeted: "I'm amazed how many have noticed @clarebalding is not wearing her wedding ring… don't worry… it's safely at home with me.."

To one concerned viewer, she responded: "I'm sure it would be fine.. but wise not to wear irreplaceable jewellery."

Former BBC Radio 4 newsreader Arnold was responding to messages from fans, with one commenting: "Why is Clare balding not wearing her wedding ring?”
