Pippa Middleton came to the rescue as Andy Murray struggled against Marin Cilic in the quarter-finals of the US Open at Flushing Meadows last night.

Murray had a harrowing start that saw him losing his first set and trailing 5-1 in the second. Rain had caused the match to be moved from the Arthur Ashe stadium to the Louis Armstrong court, where Murray has struggled before, and his early play did not bode well.

But then came Miss Middleton, wearing a sunshine yellow dress from Phase Eight - 49.50 in the sale, down from £99 - and Murray's form dramatically improved.

He plumbed his inner reserves and managed to turn the match around, winning the second set 7-6 and the next two 6-2 and 6-0.

He now faces the Czech Republic's Thomas Berdych in the semi-finals on Saturday. Number six seed Berdych knocked out world number one Roger Federer yesterday in a surprise defeat, his first ever at a quarter-final in New York.
