Sir Elton John has called for a boycott of fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana after they branded IVF children "chemical" and "synthetic".

Taking to his Instagram account to hit back at the "archaic" comments, Elton, 67, wrote: "How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic'.

And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF - a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbanaA photo posted by Elton John (@eltonjohn) on Mar 14, 2015 at 10:29pm PDT

"And shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children," he posted alongside a black and white picture of the designers.

"Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana."

The Candle In The Wind singer - who has two children, Zachary, 4, and Elijah, 2, from IVF and the help of a surrogate with his partner David Furnish - hit out following claims made by the designer duo in Italian magazine, Panorama.

Talking of procreation Domenico Dolce, 56, said: "You are born and you have a father and mother. At least it should be like that. That's why I'm not convinced by what I call chemical children, synthetic babies.

"They are wombs for hire, semen chosen from a catalogue. And then you have to explain to these children who their mother is."

When asked whether he wanted children he replied: "I am gay. I cannot have a child. I don't believe that you can have everything in life."

Stefano Gabbana, 52 - whose Primrose Hill mansion was ablaze last week - added: "The family is not a fad. In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging."

A host of famous faces have voiced their shock at the comments using the #boycottdolceandgabbana hashtag.

Singer Ricky Martin tweeted: "@dolcegabbana ur voices R 2powerfull 2B spreading so much h8. Wake up,Its 2015 Luv urselves guys #boycottdolcegabbana."

Courtney Love tweeted her disdain at the views and promised to dispose of all of the D&G clothes she owns posting: "Just round up all my Dolce & Gabbana pieces, I want to burn them. I'm just beyond words and emotions. Boycott senseless bigotry! #boycottD&G."

In a statement released last night Gabbana said: "We believe firmly in democracy and we think freedom of expression is essential for that."
