It was all about the nude look for Kim Kardashian, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez who looked close to flashing as they showcased their sheer gowns on the red carpet for the annual Met Ball.

The trio ignored the China: Through The Looking Glass theme as they appeared to attempt to outdo each other for the title of most revealing outfit.

Kim Kardashian – accompanied by her husband Kanye West – wore a Roberto Cavalli gown with only a splattering of detailing to hide her modesty while Beyonce - who arrived an hour late with husband Jay-Z - worked a gold see-through Givenchy gown.

Jenny From the Block singer Jennifer Lopez also made sure to flaunt her figure in a sheer red dress which left one side of her body on full display.

There were a number of more unusual ensembles on the red carpet including model Karen Elson who looked to be channelling Queen Elizabeth I, Lady Gaga and Madonna who wore matching outfits, Anne Hathaway who opted for a slinky gold dress with a matching hood, and Rihanna, whose show stopping yellow Chinese couture dress sparked a flurry of hilarious memes.

Despite selfies being banned by host Anna Wintour, a handful of A-listers including Justin Bieber, Kendall Jenner, Madonna and even George Clooney ignored the request and snapped away.

There was a raft of loved up couples at the star studded bash including Clooney who posed for a series of touching shots with his wife Amal Clooney. The Human Rights lawyer looked every inch an A-lister in a red ruffled John Galliano gown.

Robert Pattinson looked dapper as he accompanied his girlfriend FKA Twigs who turned heads in a colourful Christopher Kane dress with erotic prints, and appeared to be flashing a large ring on her wedding finger.

Tickets for last night's annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City cost $25,000.
