With their cloying pinks and mauves, their flat, empty landscapes and their lone cartoon man, the paintings of American artist Carroll Dunham attempt a cross between the aggressive cartoon imagery of Philip Guston and a Mr Man animation. But though they bring to mind such ready associations, Dunham's paintings fare badly by comparison.

The press release even suggests Dunham's absorption of the faux-naive 'art brute physicality of Jean DuBuffet', though, whatever you might think of the graffiti-style work of the post-war French artist, Dunham possesses little of its raw energy.

The strange, occasionally rictus-faced, besuited character who features in each of these five paintings travails the landscape, or else is shown flat on his back or veering off the canvas.

Instead of ordinary features, he has an elongated penis and testicles for some sort of approximation of nose and eyes (the testicle/eyes occasionally stretching on stalks, Tom And Jerry-style).

Such is the proliferation of male genitalia in this modernday Boy's Own cartoon fest, you might think these are the paintings of a much younger man, barely out of his phallo-centric adolescence, but Dunham is actually in his fifties.

The only good thing about this exhibition is how the shapes and rhythms of the paintings are cleverly picked up in Dunham's five freestanding painted steel sculptures. Painted in black, they present exuberant, curlicued silhouettes.
