John Adeleye became the latest hopeful to bow out of the X Factor.

Adeleye ended up in the bottom two alongside Treyc Cohen after polling the fewest viewer votes among the 12 remaining acts.

The 30-year-old Londoner opted to sing Because of You by Kelly Clarkson to stay in the competition, while Cohen performed Jennifer Hudson's One Night Only.

Girls mentor Cheryl Cole opted to spare her own act Cohen, while Adeleye was supported by his Over 28s mentor Louis Walsh.

It was left to fellow judges Dannii Minogue and Simon Cowell to choose to send Adeleye home.

As the result was announced last night, host Dermot O'Leary turned to the former care-home worker and said: "You've been an absolute gentleman, such a great voice."

Adeleye replied: "I'm going to go back to music. I'm going to go into a room and put some music down and I'm going to come out and tear it up. I'll come back. John A has left the building."

In Saturday's "guilty pleasures" themed show Adeleye sang a version of Zoom by Fat Larry's Band.

However, the on-stage dancers proved controversial, with Minogue, Cole and Cowell all claiming they were "distracting".

Meanwhile Cohen unleashed her "rock chick" side, belting out Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love.

Announcing his decision last night, Cowell appeared to criticise Walsh's earlier song choice for Adeleye.

He said: "Look John, what's been frustrating is the song last night really didn't help you, we haven't seen the you we saw at the first audition and looked after properly...Treyc, I said to Cheryl last night that wasn't going to connect...the person I'm going to send home is John."

Earlier in the show, Canadian artist Michael Buble sang his new tune Hollywood in front of the studio audience, revealing he had cut short his holiday to come and perform.

Cole also took to the stage to showcase her new solo single Promise This from her latest album Messy Little Raindrops.

All 12 acts opened the show with a performance of Forget You by Cee Lo Green.

Adeleye was the fifth act to leave the contest.
