Happy Mondays dancer and maracas player Bez brought controversy to a special musical edition of Bargain Hunt after his girlfriend bid on his team’s items at auction.

Bez, real name Mark Berry, was taking part in the daytime show with fellow band member Rowetta Idah for the BBC’s music day on Friday.

They faced off against two members of Pulp, lead singer Jarvis Cocker and keyboard player Candida Doyle, in the show which aired at 12.15pm.

The programme sees competitors attempt to buy potentially valuable antiques to sell at auction with the most profitable team winning.

Bez said the situation was a "genuine error"

Footage of the team showed the red team, made up of Happy Mondays, being announced winners after making £8 profit and their opposite duo losing £95.

But, shortly after presenter Charlie Ross made the dramatic announcement that the rules had been broken.

Speaking to viewers, he said: “Since that glorious moment at the auction we’ve discovered an irregularity.”

He then went on to show footage of Bez’s girlfriend bidding on a mirror and a turntable which his team had placed into the auction

He got the duos, minus Jarvis Cocker, together and revealed the discrepancy before stating he was going to have to “refer to the Bargain Hunt rulebook”.

Opening this, he read: “‘Rule 1.2 paragraph 3.

“Tis completely forbidden for friends or family members to bid on a team’s item. “It’s this rule which has been broken by the red team.”

Upon doing so, he announced the blue team had now won, and ordered Bez to pay back the £8 profit from his own pocket.

He obliged and said: “It’s all for a good cause isn’t it.”

Explaining the situation from his perspective, Bez said: “It was a genuine error, my girlfriend thought she was helping out.”
