Rocker Rod Stewart and girlfriend Penny Lancaster rounded out a day of smooth sailing with a pre-wedding extravaganza last night.

If the smiles on their faces as they left last night's party in Portofino were anything to judge by, their long-awaited wedding today should be one of the most joyous events of the summer.

Earlier yesterday, the couple enjoyed smooth sailing while on a luxurious family holiday ahead of the wedding.

The pair, who are parents to 18 months old Alastair, are set to marry today in a star-studded affair in the Italian resort of Portofino.

Lancaster, whom Stewart first met in 1998, pulled on a small pair of bikinis for some last minute tanning in preparation for the big day.

Stewart's daughter Kimberly has flown in to Italy for the nuptials, and joined the couple aboard the cruise.

Lancaster has said: "It's once in a lifetime, so it's going to be perfect."

"For me it's just that romantic girl's dream of your father walking down the aisle with you, and all your friends and family coming together."

However, scandal has rocked the couple's plans, after his wayward son was thrown in jail for attacking a married couple with a brick.

Sean Stewart, 26, is also accused of wrecking the couple's car in a violent temper tantrum after he was refused entry into a private party in Los Angeles.

One friend in Beverly Hills, where the star owns a home said: "Rod and Penny have been looking forward so much to their big day and they wanted everything to be perfect. Now this has cast a shadow over it."

Stewart, who has been starring in a reality show in the US called "Sons of Hollywood", was previously jailed in 2001 after he attacked a teenage motorist in Malibu.

It was unclear whether Stewart would be allowed to travel to Europe for the nuptials.

Lancaster says family is now top priority for the singer.

She has said: "At this stage in life he's able to spend more time with the family.

"It used to be all rock 'n' roll and it didn't sit so well to walk around with a pram. But he's achieved so much in his career he doesn't have to keep up that image."

She added: "Now pushing a pram isn't the embarrassing thing he thought it was, it's something to be very proud of."
