Pirelli keen to have their say

Paul Hembery is looking forward to Pirelli having their say in the tyre test saga
8 June 2013

Pirelli motor sport director Paul Hembery is relishing the prospect of airing his side of the story in the tyre test saga after hearing comments he claims "may be quite wide of the mark".

On the advice of counsel representing the Italian tyre manufacturer, Hembery opted to miss the post-practice FIA press conference.

Instead, Hembery left Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn to face the searching questions after the FIA announced an International Tribunal will now examine the test conducted in Barcelona on May 15-17.

Hembery, however, did attend a scheduled Pirelli media briefing, and although the press were informed he would not answer questions on the tribunal and the test, he did manage to touch on the thorny topic.

"We're going to a tribunal, and any lawyer will tell you at that point you have a formal process to follow, which we are happy to follow, and we'll speak about everything there," said Hembery.

"We're looking forward to the tribunal because we want to be able to demonstrate our point of view and situation."

He added: "It's not nice sometimes to hear things that may be quite wide of the mark."

Unlike Brawn, who has indicated his neck is in the noose as it was he who sanctioned the use of Mercedes' current car for the test, Hembery has no concerns over his position.

"They (the Pirelli board) are very happy. We've no worries," said Hembery.

For Brawn, it is a different matter as he offered no guarantees he will remain in his job should Mercedes be found guilty. He said: "I think there have been some rumours before (about his role) and nothing has happened. But it was my decision to do the testing, that is a fact, so let's wait and see what the tribunal find and then go from there."
