Froch makes City Ground claim

Carl Froch, right, and George Groves have both been talking about the venue for their rematch on Twitter

Carl Froch has revealed the City Ground in Nottingham is the most likely venue for his eagerly anticipated rematch against George Groves in May.

Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium were thought to be leading contenders for Groves' second shot at Froch's WBA and IBF super-middleweight showdown after a controversial first fight in November.

A rematch was arranged for May 31 and Froch has taken to Twitter to say that, after speaking to promoter Eddie Hearn, the venue in his home town is now the leading contender to stage one of the biggest domestic fights of recent times.

"Just got off the phone with @EddieHearn & the waiting is nearly over. City Ground is now the front runner. @Official_NFFC let's do this," he said.

Groves, however, was quick to respond on Twitter and gave Froch's claim short shrift.

The Londoner tweeted: "Before you all book your trains to Nottingham because the Sheriff has tweeted.. I very much doubt King John would send us all there! #Hoax"

The nerve-jangling first encounter saw underdog Groves floor Froch in the opening round and seize a scorecard lead when referee Howard Foster intervened as the resurgent Froch fired a barrage of shots.

Although the tide appeared to have turned against Groves, Foster's decision to step in as the 25-year-old came under pressure was widely condemned for being too early.
