Shots have been fired at a Hawaii school, causing injuries and prompting a lockdown.

The shooting happened today at Roosevelt High School, Honolulu Department of Emergency Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright said.

An official who answered the phone at the school says the school is locked down.

Parents gathered outside the school after word of the shooting spread.

"This is really freaking me out," Carolyn Richardson said.

She said her son told her he heard shots had been fired but that he was OK.

She used her mobile phone to video chat with her son. "I told him, I gotta hear your voice," Ms Richardson said.
