A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a pensioner after a cold case was reopened, police said.

The body of 74-year-old Joan Roddam was found near her home in West Downs, near Delabole, Cornwall, on November 8 2003.

She had last been seen alive at around 11am on November 7 and her body was found in a field at the rear of her property at about 9pm the following day.

A post-mortem examination revealed that she had died from asphyxiation.

Devon and Cornwall Police said its major crime investigation team had carried out a review of the case and a 42-year-old man had been arrested.

A force spokesman said: "Police have arrested a man following a reinvestigation of a 2003 murder inquiry.

"This follows a review by Cornwall's major crime investigation team.

"Their inquiries have resulted in the arrest this morning of a 42-year-old local man on suspicion of murder.

"He remains in custody at Launceston police station awaiting interview."
