A homeowner has been stabbed after he climbed out of his bedroom window to tackle a suspected burglar on his roof.

The man was treated in hospital for minor injuries after apprehending the intruder, who was armed with a pair of pliers, shortly after 1am on Saturday.

West Midlands Police said a 23-year-old man was arrested at the scene in Shard End, Birmingham, on suspicion of wounding and attempted burglary.

A spokesman said the man chased the suspected intruder from his roof into a nearby garden, where he pinned him to the ground with the help of neighbours who had heard the commotion.

The homeowner's partner called police, who arrived at the scene, in School Lane, within six minutes.

Detective Constable Dan Mander said: "The couple heard noises in their back garden and, seconds later, their security lighting was triggered. On seeing an intruder on his roof the resident clambered through a bedroom window to confront him and picked up some ladders to defend himself.

"It appears he's then chased him into next door's garden and continued grappling with him before neighbours have also emerged to help out.

"The resident was very brave to tackle the man and his actions certainly helped police make a swift arrest.

"Our advice is always to report suspicious activity or crimes in progress immediately on 999.

"Every incident is different but members of the public should only ever confront offenders if they're confident they can handle the situation and are not putting themselves in danger."
