Now is the time to haggle

A trip to two travel agents, two doors apart in west London, showed the extent to which rivals will outbid each other.

In Lunn Poly we were shown a self-catering flat in the Aparthotel Columbus in Playa de las Americas, Tenerife. Two weeks in July would cost £1,482 for two adults and a child, including £258 sale discount.

Flying by night would cost £1,152. At First Choice we were offered two weeks in the Aparthotel Panorama in the same resort for £1,240. We pointed out Lunn Poly's cheaper quote - which they matched with the same deal at the Columbus.

But, we asked, why should we book with First Choice rather than their rivals? A breezy manageress intervened: "We only make £100 on that booking - 10 per cent - but I could give you another £50 off..."
