PM in race against time to get track and trace up and running by June 1

Boris Johnson is in a race against time to get "track and trace" up an running in order to contain possible fresh coronavirus outbreaks and allow lockdown measures to be eased.

The Prime Minister promised that the system, seen as the key to easing the lockdown, would be in place by the start of next month.

The Government's scientific advisers said the scheme must be in place before more restrictions are lifted. If on target, some schools and shops could reopen as early as June 1 and social distancing rules could also be relaxed.

The rush came after thousands of people were seen flocking to beaches yesterday as temperatures soared, sparking fears about mixing and spreading of Covid-19.

NHS staff to be given drug touted by Trump in coronavirus trial

Frontline health workers in the UK will be able to participate in a clinical trial to test if the malaria drug touted by Donald Trump prevents coronavirus.

Testing to see if chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine can prevent Covid-19 is open to staff in Brighton and Oxford as part of the investigation.

It comes just days after the US President's decision to take the drug was described as "a staggering, irresponsible act”.

Eleven held after law student killed in drive-by shooting

Eleven people are being questioned in custody over the death of a law student gunned down in a drive-by shooting.

Innocent passer-by Aya Hachem, 19, was hit by one of several shots fired from a vehicle as she walked to a supermarket near her home in Blackburn on Sunday.

She died from a single wound to the chest.

Detectives have been granted an additional 36 hours by magistrates to question three men, aged 33, 36 and 39 on suspicion of her murder.

Police have made eight more arrests, five on suspicion of murder and three on suspicion of assisting and offender.

There will be a surge in requests from employees for permanent flexible working arrangements after coronavirus restrictions are lifted completely, research shows.

A new survey of 2,000 adults indicated that many people will want to continue working from home when the crisis ends.

More than two in five people are set to ask their employer for permanent flexible working arrangements after coronavirus restrictions are lifted completely, insurer Direct Line said.

Working from home two days a week is the most popular option, but one in 12 people are planning to ask their employer if they can work from home permanently, its report indicated.

William jokes about perils of meal times with children in video call with charity

The Duke of Cambridge has joked that the success of his family meals depend very much on "what's on the table".

Prince William was speaking to a charity in Glasgow that provides hot and healthy meals for vulnerable families during the coronavirus pandemic.
