The world's oldest person is celebrating her 117th birthday, and her doctor has revealed she keeps going on an unusual diet of raw eggs and biscuits.

Emma Morano was born on November 29, 1899, in the Piedmont region of Italy, and was the oldest of eight siblings.

She officially became the world's oldest living woman when American Susannah Mushatt Jones died in May, and is the last person still living born in the 1800s.

Tuesday marks her 117th birthday and although her longevity can partly be put down to genetics - her mother lived until she was 91 and several sisters reached 100 - her doctor says she has been helped by a diet of three eggs, two of them raw, each day for more than 90 years.

In an interview with AFP, Carlo Bava, who has looked after Ms Morano for 27 years, said: "Emma has always eaten very few vegetables, very little fruit. When I met her, she ate three eggs per day, two raw in the morning and then an omelette at noon, and chicken at dinner."

She took up the regime as a young woman after she was diagnosed with anaemia shortly after World War One.

These days she has cut down to two eggs a day, along with a few biscuits.

Mr Bava added: "We're all thinking that Emma is eternal because, despite everything, she always recovers."
