A woman has died during a cake-eating contest in Australia.

The woman, in her 60s, suffered a seizure while taking part in the Australia Day event in Hervey Bay, Queensland, on Sunday.

Contestants had earlier been filmed speed-eating the lamingtons, a traditional sponge cake covered in chocolate and desiccated coconut.

One witness said she had been “shovelling the lamington into her mouth” when she got into difficulties.

The woman was given CPR at the scene and taken to hospital but later died.
