A homeless woman has been accused of having sex with a man beneath a statue of the Virgin Mary at a church in New Jersey.

48-year-old Noelle Smart pleaded not guilty to lewdness or other charges at Seaside Heights Municipal Court.

According to authorities, Ms Smart and Anthony Getchius were found on May 22 in a “sacred area” on the grounds of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

Ms Smart told officers that she and Mr Getchius were homeless and had been sleeping rough behind the church.

She denied that they had sexual intercourse.

Mr Getchius was charged with lewdness, disrobing in public and other offences.
