Social media users were left unable to access Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook for several hours today after the apps went down.

According to Downdetector, a site that monitors outages, there were more than 7,700 incidents of people reporting issues with Facebook at the peak of the outage.

People across the globe were complaining they couldn’t access the social networks.

All three platforms, which are owned by Facebook, were said to have been suffering problems since about 11am.

The sites were up and running a few hours later however.

Many people took to Twitter to vent their frustrations at not being able to access the sites.

A spokesman for Facebook said: "Earlier today, some people may have experienced trouble connecting to the family of apps.

"The issue has since been resolved; we're sorry for any inconvenience."

Those complaining said they were being met with a message which simply read: “site can’t be reached”.
