US Olympic gold medallist Simone Biles says her "heart aches for everyone involved" after her brother was charged with murder.

Ms Biles tweeted on Tuesday to say that she was "having a hard time processing last week's news".

Tevin Biles-Thomas was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at an AirBnB rental on New Year's Eve, which killed three people and injured two others.

The 24-year-old, who serves in the US Army, is accused of opening fire at the property located above a pizza shop in Cleveland's Brooklyn Centre neighbourhood.

On Monday, Ms Biles wrote on Twitter: "My heart aches for everyone involved, especially the victims and their families.

"There is nothing I can say that will heal anyone's pain, but I do want to express my sincere condolences to everyone affected by this terrible tragedy."

She added: "I ask everyone to please respect my family's privacy as we deal with our pain. XO".

Mr Biles is accused of killing Delvante Johnson, 19 and Toshaun Banks, 21, who were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Devaughn Gibson, 23, was also rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. They each suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Two others were injured in the shooting, including a 21-year-old man who was shot in the back of the head and a 23-year-old woman who was shot in the arm.

He was detained by officers at Fort Stewart in Georgia on Thursday, according to a joint statement from police and prosecutors seen by NBC.

Biles-Thomas has been charged with murder, voluntary manslaughter, felonious assault and perjury.

"The relentless persistence of Cleveland Police Homicide detectives helped secure an indictment in this case," Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C O’Malley said to the broadcaster.

"It is through their hard work that we can begin to seek justice for these victims," he said.
