A US military helicopter has crashed in western Iraq, officials said.

The Pave Hawk helicopter was carrying seven personnel when it went down on Thursday afternoon near the Syria border.

A US army official said that fatalities were "likely" and so far there were no indications that the helicopter was brought down by hostile fire.

"Rescue teams are responding to the scene of the downed aircraft at this time," a statement from the military command said.

The helicopter, which is used by the Air Force for combat search and rescue, was in transit from one location to another when it crashed.

An investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the crash.

The US has about 5,200 troops in Iraq that are part of a coalition fighting militants from the so-called Islamic State.

Late last year, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared final victory over Islamic State, three years after the militant group captured about a third of Iraq's territory.
