The son of presidential candidate Donald Trump has compared refugees to a bowl of poisoned Skittles.

Donald Trump Jr, who is supporting his father’s campaign for the White House, caused uproar after he published a photo on Twitter.

It read: “If I had a bowl of Skittles and told you just three would kill you. Would you take a handful? That’s our Syrian refugee problem.”

Mr Trump Jr captioned it: “This image says it all. Let’s end the politically correct agenda that doesn’t put America first.”

The hashtag #Skittles began trending on Twitter as people took to social media to react. The original tweet was liked over 12,000 times, but some people hit out at the analogy.

The businessman’s comments sparked a response from Skittles’ maker, Wrigley Americas, which read: “Skittles are candy. Refugees are people. We don’t feel it’s an appropriate analogy.

“We will respectfully refrain from further commentary as anything we say could be misinterpreted as marketing.”

Musician John Legend posted a series of tweets reacting to the news.

He said: "By that logic, you would take everyone's guns away. Because someone is gonna kill somebody at some point. But I guess that doesn't count.

"Oh and human beings fleeing oppression and terror aren't skittles.
