The shooter remains at large after escaping in the ensuing chaos, police said.

The shooting happened at an "off-campus" university party in the city of Greenville.

It happened just before midnight, local time, on Saturday.

Officials said police were responding to reports of illegal parking when they heard gunshots at the back of the building.

The fatal victims, both males, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Three of the injured victims were said to be in a critical condition.

Officers estimated there were at least 750 people at the party.

Authorities were working under the theory that the shooter may have been targeting one person at the party, sheriff Randy Meeks said.

Mr Meeks described "complete chaos" after the shots rang out, with hundreds of people fleeing, including the gunman.

The 14 injured included four people who did not have gunshot wounds but who were hurt in the melee, he said.
