Suspect accused of pulling trigger in Anni Dewani shooting denies murder

Murdered: Anni Dewani
15 August 2012

The man accused of pulling the trigger of the gun which killed honeymoon murder victim Anni Dewani today pleaded not guilty to her murder.

Xolile Mngeni, 29, denied murder, kidnapping, robbery and owning an unlicensed gun in Cape Town.

His denial was the opening salvo in what is expected to be a lengthy courtroom examination of how Mrs Dewani, 28, died in 2010.

Some of the evidence is expected to shed light on the role of her husband, Shrien Dewani, whom the South Africans accused of orchestrating the murder.

Dewani, 32, denies any involvement. The case continues.
