A US family wrote a scathing obituary for a mother who apparently abandoned her children and ran off with her husband's brother.

Kathleen Dehmlow died on May 31 at the age of 80 and an obituary was posted to the Redwood Falls Gazette on Monday.

The write-up included the usual details of her life including her marriage to Dennis Dehmlow in 1957 and the birth of her two children Gina and Jay.

It then took a more scornful tone telling readers: "She abandoned her children, Gina and Jay who were raised by her parents."

“She will not be missed by Gina and Jay, and they understand that this world is a better place without her.”

The obituary went viral online and was later taken down from the Redwood Falls Gazette.

A relative of Ms Dehmlow told the Star Tribune that the facts were true however “there is a lot of stuff missing.”

Dwight Dehmlow said that she had spent the past year living in a nursing home and was with her sisters when she died.

He said there was more to the story: “She made a mistake 60 years ago, but who hasn’t. Has she regretted it over the years? Yes.”

Mr Dehmlow did not tell the Star Tribune how he was related to Ms Dehmlow.
