'Shark' bite on girl surfer, 10, was inflicted by a mackerel

A suspected shark attack on a 10-year-old girl off Australia’s east coast turned out to be carried out by a mackerel.

The girl was rushed to hospital after she was believed to have been bitten on the wrist by the shark off a beach at Lennox Head, 120 miles south of Brisbane, New South Wales, today.

The attacked prompted the closure of the beach as panic spread throughout the small beachside community.

But reports from locals later revealed the culprit to believed to be a mackerel. A police spokeswoman said the girl, a surfer, had “a scratch on her thumb”.
