Italian police are investigating after two bombs reportedly exploded in a residential district of Rome.

Firefighters and police were called to the scene in the Italian capital after a blast was heard near a post office on Friday morning.

Police believe it may have been caused by two rudimentary homemade bombs which used flammable liquid, Il Giornale reported.

The devices, controlled remotely, were placed between two cars in a car park in Via Marmorata.

Homes and businesses were evacuated following the blast in the city’s southern Aventino district.

There were no immediate reports of injuries in Italian media although a car was seriously damaged in the explosion.

Italian police said there were no immediate links to terrorism, with an "act of protest" believed to have been the motive.
