Red CentreNATS: Burning fuel sprayed into crowd in Australia at drag-racing event

Flaming fuel was sent flying into the crowd during the burnout.

Twelve spectators have been hurt after burning fuel was sprayed into a crowd from a car at a drag race in Australia.

One man is critically injured while his teenage son and ten other victims are in hospital following the horrific incident in Alice Springs.

The competition car was doing burnouts – spinning its wheels on the spot to heat up the vehicle’s tyres – when the flaming fuel hit people at the Red CentreNATS competition.

A video clip of the disaster shows people diving away as a wave of fire billows into the crowd.

The severely injured man was airlifted to hospital with 20 per cent burns.

Eight people, including the man’s 19-year-old son, are in a stable condition in hospital while two patients have been discharged.

A spokeswoman for the car race Red CentreNATStold, which has since shut down the whole event, told the BBC: “This is a distressing situation however all patients are receiving the care they need.”

Car-lovers flock to the event every year to race and display their vehicles.
