A priest was stabbed in the neck in front of his congregation during a church service in Mexico.

Father Miguel Angel Machorro was left lying on the floor of Mexico City’s Metropolitan Cathedral as blood soaked through his clothes following the attack on Monday evening.

According to witnesses quoted in La Jornada newspaper, the priest was stabbed in the neck by a knifeman during Mass in what appeared to be an attempt to cut his throat.

The clergyman is now in a “delicate but stable” condition in hospital and it is thought he will survive.

Police reportedly detained a suspect as he tried to flee from the scene.

According to the country’s National Security Commission, the attack was carried out by a man with French nationality.

The archdiocese's lawyer Armando Martínez told a news conference that they do not yet have a motive.

He said: “We cannot talk about terrorism, we cannot talk about motives because we obviously have no significant facts."
