Oscar Pistorius has been told he must stay in prison after a decision to grant him parole was delayed.

The former Paralympic champion has already seen his hearing postponed by the parole board at South Africa’s Department of Correctional Services.

Justice Minister Michael Masutha has stepped in to prevent his release, saying the move would be premature, the Associated Foreign Press reported.

Shot dead: Reeva Steenkamp

The 28-year-old double amputee, dubbed the Blade Runner, who was jailed for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013, was set to be released from prison last month.

He is less than a year into a five year prison sentence after he was found guilty of culpable homicide.

He claims he mistook Ms Steenkamp for an intruder when he shot her through the locked bathroom door at his home.

Under South African law, Pistorius was eligible for release after serving a sixth of his sentence in prison.
