Swedish police have launched a manhunt after two suspects allegedly stole priceless crown jewels belonging to the country’s royal family.

Two thieves stole two crowns and an orb, used by 17th century King Karl IX and Queen Kristina, from a cathedral in the town of Strängnäs.

Police scrambled helicopters to chase the thieves, but they escaped using a motorboat in nearby Stockholm’s vast system of lakes.

The authorities have continued to use helicopters and boats to find the culprits, but they remain at large.

The artefacts, which were stolen on Tuesday, are made of gold and enamel, and encrusted with beads, crystals and pearls.
