England and Wales football fans have been hit by a blanket booze ban in France before their Euro 2016 tie.

French authorities are imposing the 24-hour alcohol ban in Lens city centre to avoid clashes between rival fans who have travelled to the city without tickets.

No alcohol will be served in any off-licences or shops and anyone carrying alcohol or drinking in the street from 6am risks being arrested, authorities have said.

Both sets of supporters have been allocated 9,000 tickets for the game but it is expected that another 30,000 fans are heading to the northern French city to soak up the atmosphere.

Alcohol will be permitted in the official fanzone which can hold 10,000 people but ticketless supporters are being urged to go elsewhere to watch the game.

About 500,000 British fans are expected to make the cross-channel trip, with half of them not having tickets.

The 24-hour ban will start at 6am on June 16, with French Police desperate to avoid scenes reminiscent of World Cup 1998 in France where England supporters clashed with Tunisia fans and French police.

It is believed that the city centre ban is the first ever of its kind caused by football.
