Eiffel Tower set for return — but visitors must take stairs

The Eiffel Tower is preparing to welcome back visitors as lockdown restrictions are lifted in Paris —but visitors will have to climb it using the stairs.

Workers at the landmark have started preparations to re-open on June 25, after three months of shutdown, but the lifts will remain shut because of the risk of disease transmission, managers said.

Other safety measures include visitors over the age of 11 being required to wear a face covering.

There will also be a one-way system on the staircases, which will only be open to the second level. It has been the tower’s longest period of closure since the Second World War.

Operations at the site have been suspended since Wednesday afternoon. More than 1,000 workers have been tested so far, with thousands more still awaiting testing.
