Eco-warriors marked Earth Day by gluing themselves to the iconic globe outside the entrance to Universal Studios in Hollywood.

Two people from Extinction Rebellion LA were seen climbing the globe on Monday at around 3pm local time.

Once they reached the top, the activists reportedly glued themselves to the globe and waved green flags that read “climate emergency”.

Fire crews and police were called to remove the protesters from the sculpture.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrested the two men on top of the globe and two who protested on the ground.

According to the department, the four men are facing felony charges.

In a news release and a letter addressed to NBC Universal Chairman Stephen Burke, the organisation said its action sent “a clear message to NBC and the business community that humanity is running out of time”.

In a list of requests, Extinction Rebellion asked NBC/Universal to reject advertising from fossil fuel corporations and “tell the whole truth about our climate and ecological emergency”.

The incident came as the group’s London chapter staged a mass “die-in” protest at the Natural History Museum.

The group is entering its second week of protests in the capital as more than 1,000 people have been arrested.

For more than a week the activists have stopped traffic in a series of demonstrations including fixing a boat at the junction of Oxford Street and Regent Street, occupying Waterloo Bridge and disrupting the Docklands Light Railway by climbing on a train.

About 9,000 police officers have been responding to the protest since it began a week ago on 15 April.
