Donald Trump today praised Kim Jong-un after North Korea repatriated the remains of US soldiers from the Korean War.

The return of the remains, in 55 flag-draped cases, is seen as a diplomatic coup for Mr Trump.

It was one of the agreements struck during his recent meeting with Kim in Singapore, and will rekindle hopes for progress in nuclear talks.

Mr Trump tweeted: “After so many years, this will be a great moment for so many families. Thank you to Kim Jong Un.”

A White House statement said: "We are encouraged by North Korea's actions and the momentum for positive change."

A US military plane flew to an airfield in the city of Wonsan to bring the remains to South Korea’s Osan air base.

A formal ceremony will be held on Wednesday, before being flown to Hawaii for processing.

The transfer of the remains coincided with the 65th anniversary of the 1953 armistice that ended fighting between North Korean and Chinese forces on one side, and South Korean and US-led forces on the other.

More than 7,700 US troops who fought in the Korean War remain unaccounted for, with about 5,300 lost in what is now North Korea.
