Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were treated to a dance performance of fiery Havana rhythms during their historic tour of Cuba.

The couple appeared to be enjoying themselves enormously on the visit to a studio run by former Royal Ballet star Carlos Acosta, whose dance company helps disadvantaged young people from across the region to achieve their potential.

The performance blended classical, modern and traditional Cuban dance.

Acosta, who was principal guest dancer for 17 years with the Royal Ballet and danced many times for the prince, said: “From the Cuban perspective, it is a time for building bridges, and I think also for the UK they are doing the same ... so I think it’s just the perfect fit.”

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are the first members of the royal family to set foot in the country since 1959. It is hoped the four-day charm offensive will open a new chapter in the relationship between the UK and the communist state once ruled by dictator Fidel Castro. Until recently, the British royal family was not well known, but its popularity, attributed by diplomats to Netflix series The Crown, was evidenced when the couple were met by huge crowds on a tour of Havana’s Old Town. Charles and Camilla were later formally welcomed by President Miguel Diaz-Canel.

Today they were due to tour a recording studio and meet owners of Havana’s famous vintage cars.
