Britons planning summer holidays in Spain could face chaos after Spanish air traffic controllers threatened strike action.

Workers at the Barcelona Control Centre, which controls the whole of Spain’s east coast and the Balearics, said walkouts could take place in July.

It comes amid an on-going row over staffing levels, with air traffic controllers claiming they are overstretched and do not get enough rest – posing a safety risk.

The strikes will affect flights landing at airports in Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.

The first strike had initially been scheduled to begin today, but it was suspended for at least two weeks after positive talks with the government-owned air control firm Enaire.

Spain’s change of government after socialist Pedro Sanchez took over from Mariano Rajoy - who lost a vote of confidence due to a corruption scandal within his party - also contributed to the suspension of strikes.

But a spokesperson for personnel at the control centre, Raul Tobaruela, has now said that he does not expect a deal to be reached with the new government and Enaire.

Mr Tobaruela previously said that if no concrete offer is made which ensures controllers will have adequate time off, the strikes will go ahead.

There is no fixed date yet but if strikes do take place, it is likely to be in July, the busiest month for tourists travelling to Spain.

The Standard has contacted the Spanish government for comment.
