A six-year-old boy was stabbed to death and a seven-year-old girl left seriously wounded when they were attacked by a man with a butcher’s knife yards on their way to buy a snack in New York.

Prince Joshua Avitto, 6, and Mikayla Capers, 7, were in a lift together when they were stabbed repeatedly in the random attack on Sunday evening in Brooklyn.

Inez Rodriguez, president of the tenant’s association at the apartment block, said: “They were just coming outside to get some ice cream. This is the worst thing that I've ever seen in this neighbourhood.”

The boy was found dead in the lift. His distraught mother was heard crying: “Lord, they done killed my baby!”

The little girl, who was chased by the man out of the elevator on the first floor, collapsed in front of a nearby building. She was taken to hospital where she remains.

Mikayla’s great grandmother, Regenia Trevathan said: “What kind of animal would do a thing like this. I have faith in the NYPD to pound the streets until they catch this bastard.”

The attacker fled the scene after the stabbing. Police said they were searching for a male suspect in his 30s.
