Berlin's New Year's Eve celebrations will feature a "safe zone" for women.

Organisers of this year's party have introduced a contact point and protection zone for women amid fears over sexual assaults.

The move came after hundreds of women reported being attacked by gangs of men at Cologne's New Year's Eve event in 2015.

Police have also urged women to ask other revellers for help if they feel threatened and to carry a small bag with fewer valuables.

This year's New Year's Eve event in Berlin will take place between the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column on Sunday.

The street party stretches over two kilometres with multiple stages, party tents and food, before fireworks will welcome in the new year.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend the festivities, and there will be an event-wide ban on large bags, backpacks and suitcases.

Women who have been victims of sexual assault or feel harrassed will be able to seek support from the German Red Cross on Ebertstrasse.

The special "safety" zone was announced as part of strict security notes released by the police.

There will also be concrete bollards, barricades and other barriers such as police cars deployed, The Local Germany reported.

Germany was horrified two years ago after large numbers of women reported sexual assaults and muggings by gangs of men in Cologne on New Year's Eve.

The Cologne attacks led to officials establishing a "security point" at the city's 2016 carnival.

Berlin previously deployed heightened security at the event in 2016 after 12 people were killed and another 48 injured when a truck drove into a nearby Christmas market less than two weeks earlier.
