At least four people were killed and up to 80 injured after a Moscow underground train derailed in a tunnel at the height of the morning rush hour.

Three carriages came off rails in a tunnel between the Molodezhnaya and Slavyansky Bulvar stations after a power surge triggered an alarm causing the Metro train to halt suddenly.

Some 300 people were led off the train in the west of the capital.

The rescue services were still helping the injured from the scene amid fears that the death toll could rise.

There were fears seven more people were trapped in the train.

The driver was among the dead.

At least 22 people were taken to hospital as a result of the accident. Several were evacuated by rescue helicopter.

Dozens more were “slightly injured” in the horror.

A probe was launched into the cause of the derailment.

The 202 mile Moscow metro with 194 stations was originally built in the Stalin era and fourth busiest in the world.
