An Australian woman has told of how her iPhone’s digital assistant Siri helped to save the life of her one-year-old daughter when she stopped breathing.

Stacey Gleeson ran to grab her iPhone after realising her child, Giana, had turned blue and was struggling to breathe in her bedroom.

As she entered her daughter’s room at their home in Cairns, she dropped the phone on the floor in a panic and yelled at the handset to activate Siri and call 999.

Ms Gleeson managed to communicate with the emergency services on speaker phone and resuscitate Giana, who was breathing again by the time an ambulance arrived.

The story went viral after she contacted Apple to say thank you as she believes Siri helped to save her daughter’s life.

"I've only had the phone since the start of the year,” she told the BBC.

"I had played around with Siri, I thought it was a fun feature. Now I have that feature turned on all the time and it will never be turned off again."

The child, who was battling a chest infection at the time, has made a full recovery and will not suffer any last damage.

Ms Gleeson said that even if she hadn’t dropped the phone, she felt she may have struggled to dial 999 in the heat of the moment.

She added: "Saving me the trouble of having to physically dial emergency services was a godsend."
