Ankara explosion: At least 28 killed in car bomb blast in Turkish capital

Sebastian Mann17 February 2016

At least 28 people have been killed and 61 others are injured following an explosion in the Turkish capital of Ankara.

The large blast is thought to have been caused by a car bomb that targeted vehicles carrying military personnel when they were stopped at traffic lights.

Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the attack and said it exceeded all "moral and humane boundaries".

It took place during rush hour near to the country’s parliament and about 300m away from military headquarters.

Turkey's prime minister Ahmet Davutoglu cancelled a planned visit to Brussels following the explosion so that he and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan could attend a security meeting.

The government has imposed a gag order banning media organisations from broadcasting or printing graphic images of the dead or injured from the scene of the explosion. Similar bans have been imposed after previous attacks.

It was not clear who was behind the bombing. Kurdish rebels, the Islamic State (IS) group and a leftist extremist group have carried out attacks in the country in recent months.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel sharply condemned the attack, saying she was horrified by it and that her thoughts were with the families of the victims and the injured.

In a statement, she said: "I'm telling the Turkish people: we as Germans are sharing your pain."

She added: "In the battle against those responsible for these inhuman acts we are on the side of Turkey."
