A group of LGBTQ activists will host a “dance party” to greet Vice President Mike Pence on a state visit.

The dance party, which is being co-hosted by Progress Ohio will take place outside the Renaissance Hotel in Columbus. Mr Pence is due to make a speech about the Republican tax law there on Friday.

According Facebook, the event will involve performances from drag queens and live DJ sets.

The dance party is being held to protest Mr Pence’s visit.

The Vice President has openly held anti-LGBTQ beliefs during his time in office.

In 2010 he voted against the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal which allowed LGBT Americans to openly serve their country in military service and in 2014 he supported HJR-3, a bill to add an amendment banning same-sex marriage to Indiana’s Constitution.

Co-organiser of the event Jay Smith told Newsweek: “We all kind of decided the best way to protest is to have a dance party,”

He said he wanted the event to provide a positive atmosphere for the LGBTQ community.

“We want this to be a very positive, upbeat event that will showcase for other people in the [LGBTQ] community that may not be out or struggling with their gender identity.

“The Trump administration doesn’t have their back, but we do, and we will be fighting for you every day. We support you, we will fight for you and we love you,” he said.

More than 500 people have already clicked attending on the Facebook event with 1,800 claiming they are interested in attending.

The party will coincide with the first day of Ohio’s Pride Weekend.

“I just want the entire street filled with rainbows and people dancing,” Mr Smith said.
